Imagine enjoying the outdoors without the annoyance or fear of noisy, biting bugs. With EXPEL Insect Armor (“EXPEL”), this world can be yours today. After more than ten years of research and development, EXPEL is making its commercial launch.

How did it all start?

More active military service days in Vietnam and Iraq were lost to disease than combat. EXPEL fabric was originally developed for the military to protect our soldiers abroad, where they had little natural immunity to a host of diseases most often transmitted through insect bites.

After years of laboratory and extensive field testing by the military in Florida, Peru and Greece, Expel Industries is now supplying Bednets (portable tents that cover sleeping bags or cots) to the US Army and Marines. As one Major General quotes, “The system provides complete protection from all insects. Every Army Infantry solider should have one.”

Even as EXPEL serves as the first line of defense for our soldiers abroad, EXPEL can now protect hunters, fishers, campers and families in insect-prone areas. Application examples include tents, sleeping bags, screen houses, apparel, hats, shoes, outdoor patio furniture, sofas (kills dust mites and fleas), pet beds, and horse blankets.

“EXPEL coated fabric, treated with the EPA-approved insecticide Permethrin effectively repels and kills mosquitoes and other pests, according to a year-long study by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).”

- America’s Textiles International Magazine

“Expel is positioned to become the next Gore-tex… a quality high-performance fabric which earns the trust of enthusiasts and casual users alike”

- Michael Hsieh, President, Li and Fung Venture Capital

“The “Bednet” was evaluated and accepted as one of the top programs for the United States Army Infantry Center”

- Major General C. P., US Army Commanding General

How does it work?

Unlike more temporary applications which dip finished garments, EXPEL’s patented process infuses insecticide into the fabric fiber before assembly, providing superior protection from insects and the diseases they carry. EXPEL fabric repels and kills a wide variety of crawling and flying insects, including mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, midges, ants, flies and spiders. This means humans are less likely to contract insect-borne diseases such as West Nile virus, viral encephalitis, yellow and dengue fever, malaria, Lyme disease, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

The key ingredient is Permethrin, a synthesized compound that closely resembles a botanical compound derived from the Chrysanthemum except it has been augmented to provide greater repellency and stability from sunlight and oxidation. It is resistant to washing and heat, odorless, and non-irritating to the skin. EXPEL’s unique patented process of treating fabric provides effective repellency for 25 washings and is EPA registered and approved for your safety.
